RS21 UK & Ireland Cup Round 1 – Event Report

Location: Hamble le Rice, UK

The RS21 UK & Ireland Cup Round 1 took place from April 19th to 21st, 2024, in Hamble le Rice, marking the first round of the highly anticipated RS21 Cup series. This event brought together teams from across the UK and Ireland to compete in a series of competitive races. 

The three-day event featured 8 races and exciting head-to-head matchups, setting the stage for the subsequent rounds of the series.

The main goal of the RS21 UK & Ireland Cup is to bring together top sailors from the UK and Ireland for an exciting series of competitive events that highlight the skills and teamwork required in RS21-class sailing. 

Hamble le Rice, known for its scenic coastal views and excellent sailing conditions, provided the perfect backdrop for the competition. The location is renowned for its accessibility to both amateur and professional sailors and its robust sailing infrastructure.

The competition was fierce, with teams navigating both tactical challenges and unpredictable conditions, including notably windy weather that tested their skill and adaptability.

At the conclusion of the event, the following teams were recognized for their outstanding performances:

  • 1st Place: IRL290 – Zaddy – Philip Bendon
  • 2nd Place: GBR284 – RS Sailing – Nick Redding
  • 3rd Place: GBR315 – 5 o’clock somewhere – Ben Rolfe

The event received positive feedback from participants, with many praising the weather conditions, race organization, or logistics.

The RS21 UK & Ireland Cup Round 1 in Hamble le Rice was a highly successful event, setting the stage for an exciting series of races throughout 2024. The competition showcased incredible talent and sportsmanship, and the strong turnout reflects the growing popularity of the RS21 class in the region.

The RS21 Cup series will continue with Round 2, taking place in Hayling Island as part of the RS 30th Anniversary regatta  on 17th -19th May. Teams who participated in Round 1 will look to build on their performances, while new teams will join the competition for another exciting round of racing.
