The RS Sailing 30th Anniversary Event took place from 17th-19th May at Hayling Island, marking a significant milestone for RS Sailing as part of their anniversary celebrations. The event drew a remarkable turnout, with over 1000 competitors in total across the classes, also making it the biggest turnout for an RS21 event in the UK. The weekend was filled with intense racing, camaraderie, and a fantastic social atmosphere, culminating in a vibrant party on the Saturday evening that was enjoyed by all.
The event experienced light winds throughout, creating a unique challenge for sailors, as the breeze hovered around 4-6 knots. Despite the calm conditions, the racing remained highly competitive, with sailors using strategy and skill to navigate the light air and unpredictable gusts. While the conditions tested the sailors’ tactical abilities, they also ensured close and exciting racing throughout the fleet.
The racing on Hayling Island’s waters was close and intense, with several tight battles for the podium spots. Despite the light winds, competitors kept up the pace and showcased impressive boat handling and tactical acumen. Each race was marked by tightly contested finishes, with leaders frequently changing positions as crews adapted to the wind shifts and tidal currents.
The highlight of the event wasn’t just the racing but also the party. The RS Sailing community came together for a fantastic celebration, with live music, food, drinks and DJs. The event provided an excellent opportunity for sailors of all levels to mingle, share experiences, and celebrate the history and future of RS Sailing.
The RS Sailing Anniversary Event at Hayling Island was a resounding success, not just in terms of competition but also in fostering a sense of community within the RS Sailing family. With close racing, great weather (despite the light winds), and an incredible atmosphere both on and off the water, the event lived up to its reputation as one of the biggest and most enjoyable sailing gatherings in the UK. We look forward to the next edition, where the competition is sure to be even fiercer.
The Lymington Town SC team (252) and the Loch Lomond SC team (341) of Hugh Watson sailing with Duncan Hepplewhite, Helen Watson and Calum Reid dominated the event hosted by Hayling Island SC.
Willis won five of the eight races to finish with 9 points and a two point advantage over of Watson with three race wins to finish with 11 points.
In third place was Philip Bendon (290) with Joel Carey, Harry Phelps and Jack R of the Royal Southern YC, with a two point advantage over 4th placed Nigel Rolfe sailing with Richard Watsham and Peter Chaplin.
